THE BUDDHA’S TEACHINGS (DHARMA)
1. Read pages 12 to15 of “The Buddhist Experience” carefully.
2. Learn what the THREE UNIVERSAL TRUTHS are.
You need to know that they are:
ANICCA (EVERYTHING CHANGES)
ANATTA (NO PERMANENT SELF)
DUKKA (SUFFERING)
and you need to understand what they mean (but you don’t have to
know word for word what it says underneath each of these).
3. Learn what the FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS are.
You need to know that they are:
(1) ALL LIFE INVOLVES SUFFERING.
(2) THE ORIGIN OF SUFFERING IS CRAVING.
(3) IF CRAVING CEASES, SUFFERING WILL ALSO CEASE.
(4) THE MIDDLE WAY.
Again, you need to
understand what they mean, but you don’t need to learn word for word
the explanation in the book. (Please note: in the explanations, when it
talks about illness it means suffering.)
4. In the wheel that you have been given, write each step of the
NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH. If you feel it will help you to learn the
explanations of these, then write them on the wheel as well.
5. Learn the eight parts of the NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH (Right
View, Right Intention etc) and be able to explain what they mean.
You do not need to learn them in order.
